The roughly symmetrical design of Luminous Oak and its presentation in burnished steel is a contemporary interpretation of the classical coat-of-arms. While the strength of the steel as a material is kept, the weaponry of a past era is here replaced by the timeless symbology of Maryland’s state tree, the great White Oak. It hangs over the stone hearth of the Library’s great room.
